Check out the 714-S-1 and 714-S-2's Grand Philmont Adventure from 7/12 - 7/26/04.  There are bunches of libraries.  These libraries are in chronological order.  Keep clicking to see them all.  Note that these photos are high resolution and your browser may take longer than normal to display them all (depending on connection speed and other factors).  Library #15

At the Cimarron River.  We arrived around 11am. This day, since we were headed for Upper Bench, a dry camp, our plan was to make dinner for lunch.  Afterwards, we needed to fill up all our water jugs and collapsible canteens for the hike up to Upper Bench.  This was a popular stop for many crews.  James tries to get a signal since the culvert where we are standing since this is just below Highway 64.  No luck getting a signal.

The Cimarron River.

Still no signal.

The skies were beautiful...at least we thought, for now.

Chef Kenny at it again.

The water brigade.  It was also a great opportunity to soak our feet.

We had heard that some units could order pizza from the river, but the number was crossed out.  Oh well!

A little moleskin was needed here by Sam.  This was the last photo we would take...storms approaching fast!

We survived a near flood and an electrical storm of major proportions.  We ended up taking our packs off and assuming the crouching position.  It was scary!  Here after the storm, we were treated to an unbelievable amount of hail on the mountain as we hiked to Upper Bench.

Large hail had fallen.  Note the size as compared to the tip of our hiking stick tip.

Lots of hail!

And more!

Finally, we arrived at Upper Bench.  That was a long day.  It was about 48 degrees when we arrived.

Upper Bench was a North facing slope, so the hail and cold remained.  There were places that looked like huge snow fields.

The infamous Pilot to Co-Pilot at Upper Bench.

This was our coldest camp.  We broke out some soup that a few of us brought from home.  It was great!

Nick and several others were tending to blisters.

July 22, 2004:  Breaking camp at Upper Bench.

On the trail towards Cimarroncito.

Still lots of hail remained here...enough to cover our boots.
